Route

The route stretches along the southern edge of the Khan Khentii Special Protected Area, east of Ulaanbaatar. Khan Khentii is the birthplace of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire, and the site of his prehistoric tomb.

Along this route, you'll encounter prehistoric deer stones, historic Buddhist temples that once flourished, the Blue Lake, the historic site where Temujin was crowned Genghis Khan, Kangal Lake with its clear waters and beautiful forests, and countless sheep, goats, horses, and cattle—all testaments to the nomadic lifestyle that has persisted since prehistoric times. Perhaps you'll experience "the other side of the world" on the Mongolian Plateau.

The Malchin Trail opens in late August, and the weather in Khentii is still early autumn (low 9°C, high 22°C).

The photo below was taken in ealry September.     It is really beautiful and perfect for bikepacking during that season.
